Real Life Lessons - Don't Ask Me How I Know
Thursday November 5th, 2009

Here is installment two of “Don’t Ask Me How I Know”.  In case you missed the first one here is the basic concept behind this blog.

Recently we did something on the show called, “Don’t Ask Me How I Know” based on a country song I love by a guy named Bobby Pinson.  (No, I don’t expect you to know him.   He’s great though if you love “real” country music).  The song is about lessons he learned in life that he is sharing with others.  The only catch is he learned them the hard way, so don’t ask him to tell you the story of how he came to know these things.

While thinking about graduation the other day (both High School and college) I began to realize that the best lessons you can learn in both are things that you can’t learn in school.  They are real life experiences.

So, I got together with a couple of friends (one I’ve known since 4th grade and the other since my Freshman year of college) who I have shared a great deal with through the years.  They both know each other, so we have all shared a great deal of fun through the years.  Together they helped me compile lessons that I have learned that would be good to share with those students entering college and those entering the real world.  The following are all things that I learned with my two buddies the hard way.

Don’t ask me how I know the following…

When dancing on a balcony, don’t try to jump down to the next one, and fall between them.  But, if you do, extra style points for being able to get back up and pass it off as no big deal that you peeled off 6 layers of your entire back.

When a severely bleeding friend is lying outside your door at 3 am after wiping out a carload of idiots…DON’T ASK QUESTIONS JUST OPEN THE DOOR!!!!!

A man trying to pick up women in his underwear, wearing cowboy boots and a hat carrying a half gallon of bourbon and yelling "I wanna party wich u babe” actually worked…once.  Later he remembered that he is a Christian and was embarrassed and humiliated.  But it did prove that college can be a fun and interesting place.

If your best bud needs to make 27 late night 2 am drunken phone calls to his ex who he’s still pining for, suck it up an roll with it, you’re his wingman. (Rag him mercilessly the next day, but next time after having a few drinks just hand him the phone and help him dial).  NOTE…this also applies to girls.  Just laugh and be there for her.

Never let a buddy go down without backup, especially without his hat, (Take on the world if ya gotta).  Sidenote…if it’s a bar fight anything in the building can be used as a weapon.  However, remember that rule applies for the group of guys you are fighting also.

When you destroy a buddy’s transmission because you’re late for the (insert favorite band here) concert…being "Sucks to be you dude” guy probably isn’t helping.

If you find yourself on the sidewalk in New Orleans and think that lighting a small fire on the sidewalk to stay warm using Everclear is a good idea…IT’S NOT!!!  It doesn’t go out easily and the NOPD does not think it’s funny or effective.

You CAN survive on celery and peanut butter for over 2 weeks if you have to.  Sidenote…celery and mayonnaise will work for a couple of days but gets old much faster.

When a buddy’s car breaks down in East Deliverance, USA, you stay with him however long it takes, even if you live right down the road.  That’s called friendship.

Let me know what you have from your experiences.  I would love to produce another list of your submissions.  Email them to me at acetj@acetj.com.

God bless and thanks for listening and subscribing.

Ace
