DAVID HASSELHOFF CLAIMS HE WAS TREATED SUNDAY FOR AN INNER EAR PROBLEM . . . NOT AN ALCOHOL RELAPSE:

DAVID HASSELHOFF says he was NOT hospitalized Sunday because he fell off the wagon and was drinking. 

He claims he had an inner ear problem that was brought on . . . at least in part . . . by a medication he's taking that PREVENTS him from drinking.

Here's the quick version of David's side of the story, as told by his attorney:  David had an ear infection, and was taking an antihistamine called Antivert to treat it.

But he was also taking an unrelated drug called Antabuse . . . which is used to treat recovering alcoholics.  (--It makes you sick if you drink while you're taking it.)

Well, these two meds didn't mix well, and David got dizzy and lost his equilibrium.  He couldn't reach his doctor, so he called the paramedics.

David's attorney says, "This was all a misunderstanding . . . This was not an alcohol relapse.  David was taken to Encino Hospital on Sunday and released within the hour.  He's fine now."

(--The Hoff was trucking around Beverly Hills yesterday, and to be fair, he didn't look like a man who'd been on the verge of alcohol-induced death less than 24 hours earlier. )
