DENNIS QUAID MAY BE ESTRANGED FROM BROTHER RANDY OUT OF FEAR:

We haven't heard DENNIS QUAID chime in about his brother RANDY'S legal troubles.  And that may be because he's TERRIFIED of Randy's crazy wife Evi.

Becky Altringer . . . the private investigator who's been blabbing to the media about the Quaids nonstop since last week . . . says that Randy has been estranged from his family since he married Evi.

She said, "Randy told me that none of his family will see or talk to him because of Evi.  He told me that he really misses his mother and his brother Dennis, but that they are all afraid of Evi.  I used to see him tear up when he'd talk about them."

(--That's a long estrangement.  Randy and Evi have been married since 1989.)

In an update from TMZ.com: The enormous sign Evi Quaid made last week -- which accused her arresting officer of taking bribes -- somehow caught fire this weekend ... and lucky for everyone, the Quaids weren't around to complain about it.

Law enforcement sources say the Quaids skipped town before Evi's sign caught fire on Saturday -- and as of right now, cops don't have any clue as to who's to blame for the flame.

One thing is clear ... someone in Marfa, Texas isn't amused by Evi's antics -- and considering her recent track record with the local police, we don't expect the minor crime to get solved any time soon.
