AUTHOR MAURICE SENDAK HAS A MESSAGE FOR PARENTS WHO THINK THE "WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE" MOVIE WILL BE TOO SCARY FOR KIDS: "GO TO HELL":
Tuesday October 13th, 2009
When MAURICE SENDAK'S now-classic children's book, "Where the Wild Things Are", came out in 1963, there was a big uproar among parents who thought it might be too scary for kids.
Well, it's 46 years later, and very few kids find that book frightening anymore . . . if they ever did.
But the movie version hits theaters this weekend. And there's a brand new controversy over whether IT might be too intense for children.
Well, Maurice got fed up with that garbage 46 year ago, and he's got no patience for it now. In fact, he's got a message for parents who think the movie might be too scary.
He says, "I would tell them to go to hell. That's a question I will not tolerate." (!!!)
He adds, "If they can't handle it, go home. Or wet your pants. Do whatever you like. But it's not a question that can be answered.
"This concentration on kids being scared, as though we as adults can't be scared. Of course we're scared. I'm scared of watching a TV show about vampires. I can't fall asleep. It never stops. We're grown-ups; we know better, but we're afraid."
He adds, "I saw the most horrendous movies that were unfit for a child's eyes. So what? I managed to survive."
(You have to love this guy. 81 years old and he's still talking smack. And he's right. If his book scared some kids, SO WHAT??? And if the movie does the same, SO WHAT??? Kids SHOULD get scared once in a while.)
