A GUY WHO WON THE LARGEST LOTTO JACKPOT EVER BACK IN 1981 . . . IS NOW COMPLETELY BROKE
Thursday October 8th, 2009
In 1981, a guy named Lou Eisenberg won $5 MILLION in the lottery. At the time, it was the largest lotto jackpot ever won.
But nearly 30 years later, 81-year-old Lou has blown through all of his winnings, and now he lives in a mobile home in Lake Worth, Florida.
So what happened to all of Lou's money?
Well, Lou's first mistake was to collect his money in yearly installments, which, after taxes, only came to about $130,000 a year. But choosing the installment plan over the lump sum option wasn't Lou's only mistake:
#1.) Lou developed a bit of a gambling problem, and became a regular at his local dog track.
#2.) Lou traveled a lot, and always picked up the check whenever he went out with friends.
#3.) Lou got divorced three times and NEVER made his wives sign a prenup.
But, in spite of all that, Lou says, "I wouldn't have done it any other way . . . Whoever needed something, I gave cash. I wanted to be nice to people . . . I lived for the day." (New York Daily News / Wallet Pop)
