THERE ARE FEWER CAR CRASH DEATHS NOW THAN EVER BEFORE
Friday October 23rd, 2009
You might think that with all the drunk, distracted, and generally TERRIBLE drivers on the roads these days, there's never been a worse time to get behind the wheel. But you couldn't be further from the truth.
In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the number of Americans dying in car crashes is at an all-time LOW.
Based on the latest estimates, there were approximately 1.15 deaths for every 100 MILLION vehicle miles traveled in the first half of 2009. That's compared to 1.46 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2005.
Overall, 43,510 people died in car accidents in 2005. But if the current trend continues, there will be fewer than 35,000 traffic deaths this year.
So, why are there fewer traffic deaths this year? Well, it seems there are several reasons, including:
More standard safety features like airbags and anti-lock brakes
More highway rumble strips
More people wearing their seatbelts
And fewer drivers on the road because of the ECONOMY (Wall Street Journal)
